str
Short for "string," a plain piece of text like a name, address, or sentence. People say "str" when they mean words or letters as data, not numbers or special codes.
What a model may hear
- string data type Python, C, Java, and most programming languages
- Treat the value as a sequence of characters, enforce text operations, and reject math or bitwise logic
- structure or struct C, C++, systems programming
- Expect a fixed memory layout, packed fields, or binary record format
- STR file format bioinformatics, chemistry
- Look for Short Tandem Repeat data or molecular structure files
- stream Unix, networking, I/O APIs
- Assume a continuous flow of bytes or data channel, not a stored value
- STR instruction ARM assembly, low-level hardware
- Interpret as a store-to-memory command with register operands
Where people and models part ways
“str my data”
Meant: Label my text data as a string
May be taken as: Model assumes Python type annotation and may reject non-text or apply str() conversion rules
Say instead: “treat this as plain text”
“parse the str”
Meant: Read and understand the text
May be taken as: Model looks for a .str file extension or bioinformatics format parser
Say instead: “parse this text string”
“str of numbers”
Meant: Numbers written out as text like "123"
May be taken as: Model stores as numeric type or applies string encoding that breaks digit sequences
Say instead: “the digits one-two-three as text”
“fix the str”
Meant: Correct spelling or grammar in the text
May be taken as: Model modifies struct memory layout or rewrites ARM store instruction
Say instead: “correct the text”
Tips
- Say "text" or "plain text" instead of "str" when you do not need a programming type
- If you mean Python specifically, say "Python string" to avoid struct or stream confusion
- Quote the content to signal you mean text: str("like this")
- Avoid "str" alone when discussing files; say "string value" or "text file"
- In code contexts, write the full word "string" in comments for clarity
Often confused with
- string
- the full word, unambiguously text
- struct
- memory layout, not character sequence
- stream
- flowing data, not a stored value
- char
- single character, not a sequence
- txt
- file extension, not a data type
- std::string
- C++ specific, not generic
